Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Reynolds, North Dakota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in hair testing. Testing centers are available in cities nationwide for these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, whether it's from the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have more often included a hair follicle drug test. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals have opted for hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation frequently use hair tests. The main advantage is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, collected through observed processes and hard to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can extend an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome mainly includes four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is preliminarily processed into the lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary method for detecting drugs of abuse. While Screening proves to be a budget-friendly strategy to negate drug use in many samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, a portion of hair from the primary sample is taken for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair Program and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can track drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection time.
  • High resistance to tampering: Altering results of a hair drug test is extremely challenging, boosting result accuracy.
  • Historical use: It offers a pattern of drug use across a timeframe, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes an estimated 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
