Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Rugby, North Dakota. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we at Accredited Drug Testing specialize in these tests, with facilities in cities across the nation capable of performing them. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair testing can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for additional options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for detecting substances. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are chosen by employers with firm no-drug policies, judicial systems, and people on probation. The significant advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, making it hard to tamper with. However, for recent use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair has the ability to capture a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the hair fiber as it grows. A sample collected near the scalp can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect hair, quite challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is an optimal amount for both screening and confirming. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is ideal. It is recommended to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where the sample is entered into the laboratory’s tracking system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional manual data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment used to check for the presence of drugs. This step is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples; however, a positive result from screening must be confirmed for it to be legally valid. Samples that test positive initially in Screening will require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing one of the most complex methods to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Samples showing presumptive positives undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is reviewed under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical patterns: It offers an overview of drug use trends over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent ingestion: Drugs require about 5-7 days post-consumption to be detected in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variable results: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
