Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Verona, North Dakota. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Individuals typically require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head or body for the test to be applicable. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing requirements.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse specialists have opted for hair testing over the traditional urine method. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, the courts, and those on probation. This test's main advantage is its extended drug detection duration, which can reach up to 90 days, is conducted under observation, and is extremely difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are recognized as an effective means for identifying substance use, including both drugs and alcohol. Hair strands offer a protracted history by capturing markers within the hair's fibers. When taken near the scalp, they can offer an approximate 3-month detection window for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, typically 200 strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional checks, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is needed. It’s advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair may suffice. When we mention head hair, it strictly refers to scalp hair. On the other hand, body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing result process in laboratories encompasses four chief steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample's initial processing within a lab's framework. This step entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and augmenting any missing information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase provides an initial quick assessment for drug use. It’s a budget-friendly means to exclude drug usage for most samples. However, a positive result in screening requires confirmation for legal proceedings. Any samples with a preliminary positive outcome demand further confirmation.

If a sample shows a potential positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This involves extracting drugs from hair at a concentration notably lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), thus making hair drug testing quite challenging.

Confirmation for any sample initially testing positive is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with initial positive results are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, undergoes review per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which are more limited.
  • Difficult to tamper: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical usage: Offers insights into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically pricier than other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
