Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Akron, Ohio. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and has facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing requirements.

Lately, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing methods has surged. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests cater to organizations enforcing zero-tolerance on drug use, legal systems, and probationary individuals. The extended detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with the observed collection process, enhances its credibility, though urine tests remain superior for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and various drugs. With collection from the area near the scalp, hair can yield up to an estimated 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

To collect 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for testing and verification, a 1.5-inch length with about 200 hair strands (approximating a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp is needed. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample of hair is advised. It is beneficial to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of other body hair can be obtained. The term head hair strictly refers to scalp hair; body hair encompasses the other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test outcome involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is concerned with the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This phase includes confirming proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry tasks omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary swift assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires verification for legal acceptability. Samples showing presumably positive results in Screening necessitate a confirmatory analysis.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are taken from hair at a much lower concentration than what other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid) provide, explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening outcomes are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed per CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug analysis can trace drug usage back to 90 days, notably longer than the timeframe for urine testing.
  • Hard to falsify: Tampering with hair drug tests is exceedingly challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers past consumption data: This method can map drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Impractical for detecting recent intake: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
