In Bolindale, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our specialization in hair-related drug and alcohol tests ensures top-notch service across our Nation-wide centers. Typically, hair follicle samples of 1.5 to 2 inches are needed from the crown or body. Our tests can be customized for various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG analysis.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in recent years. This method is favored over urine tests by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Entities with zero-tolerance policies often rely on hair testing, offering an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This observed collection process ensures accuracy, though urine tests might be more effective in detecting very recent use.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The growing hair strand fibers capture biomarkers that represent a long-term history of alcohol and drug usage. Hair sampled near the scalp can furnish a detection window for drugs and alcohol of up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, amounts to 100mg, which is the optimal size for both screening and confirmation. For tests with EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a corresponding volume of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

Four primary stages compose the laboratory processing of drug tests: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the sample's initial integration into a lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in numerous samples, a Screening positive necessitates confirmation to stand in court. All samples with presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is sourced from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations notably lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation of any screening positive occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Presumptive positive samples are washed when necessary before confirmation. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, adhering also to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to cheat: Due to the difficulty in manipulating a hair drug test, results typically exhibit greater accuracy.
  • Depicts historical use: Such tests can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, unlike those indicating only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs require around 5-7 days before becoming traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher costs than other drug detection methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
