Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bremen, Ohio. If you're seeking a drug or alcohol test via hair samples, our company excels in this area, providing locations in every city Nationwide for scheduled hair testing. To proceed, generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from your head's crown or other body hair is required. These hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method of screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts frequently opt for hair tests instead of traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle assessments are preferred by workplaces with strict drug-use policies, legal entities, and probationers. A key advantage of this method is the extended detection span of up to 90 days, with collections done under supervision, significantly reducing the risk of tampering. However, for drug use in the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures extended-term evidence of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in its fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can detect drugs and alcohol for up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to alter, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or over 10-panel tests, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information entry not handled through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective means of eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples that show presumptively positive results in Screening require a secondary validation.

If a sample displays presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than found in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology.

Any positive screening result is verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to fake: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It provides insights into drug consumption patterns over time, beyond merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
