Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Minster, Ohio. If you require hair drug or alcohol screening, we have nationwide centers offering these services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp, though body hair may also be used. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific analyses.

Recently, there's been a shift towards utilizing hair follicle drug testing as a prevalent method. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method is favored for zero-tolerance policies due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, unique observation collection, and difficulty to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain superior for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an influential method for identifying the presence of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a record keeper, capturing biomarkers within its fibers, which grow over time. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reflect drug or alcohol usage over roughly a 3-month span. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is tricky, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The process in the lab for drug testing comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes processing a sample into the lab system initially. This step checks if the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns it a specific LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adds any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary examination for substance abuse. Screening is economical for eliminating most drug usage, but a positive requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples that tentatively show positive results in Screening must have a secondary verification.

For samples that appear positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than via other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

For verifying any positive results from Screening, Confirmation is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed prior to Confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It’s very challenging to meddle with a hair drug test, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the content of drug metabolites.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, avoiding the scalp’s follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
