Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Broughton, Ohio. Specializing in hair tests for drugs or alcohol, we have centers across all cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices. These hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specified options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation particularly use hair tests. Their advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, with observed collection making cheating nearly impossible. For screening use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands of hair (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields roughly 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for testing and validation. For an EtG, additional testing, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically, whereas body hair pertains to all other areas (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This stage ensures that the sample was sealed and shipped properly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional manual data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive results obtained during Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, versus the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Difficult to manipulate: The accuracy of hair drug tests is high due to the difficulty of test manipulation.
  • Historical usage pattern: These tests reveal drug usage patterns over time, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests often cost more than other methods.
  • Result variations: The concentration of drug metabolites in hair can depend on factors like hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

A Lengthy Detection Period
Hair follicle drug tests, favored in Broughton, OH, exceed the capabilities of traditional urine tests. Boasting a detection window of up to 90 days, they reveal substance use histories unavailable through urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
