In Brunersburg, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. If a hair or alcohol test is what you need, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with testing locations nationwide to meet your needs. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the method of choice for drug screening. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer these tests over traditional urine testing. This type of test is valued for its extended detection period, seeking traces of drug use up to 90 days, is collected in a monitored setting, and is virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting very recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has established itself as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of about 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair can't be collected, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample's processing into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, further confirmation is necessary for a positive screen to be legally admissible. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set for Extraction, where drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other approaches (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing more complex.

Any positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen in alignment with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, which leads to more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative methods of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
