Columbus Grove, Ohio trusts Accredited Drug Testing for comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether you require drug or alcohol screening, we excel in conducting hair tests with facilities spanning Nationwide. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for testing. Our hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specific testing solutions.

The past few years have seen an increase in the use of hair follicle drug tests as a favored method. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now often choose hair testing over traditional urine testing. This method is ideal for zero-tolerance policies, court requirements, or probation conditions. Its chief advantage is its ability to detect drug use within a 90-day frame, ensuring an observed and foolproof sample collection, though urine tests still dominate for recent use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of long-term substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While screening offers an economical means to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge among methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are washed prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Hair drug testing benefits:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a more limited detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly unlikely, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of revealing recent use: Detection of drugs in hair typically takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods in Columbus Grove, OH, hair follicle testing emerges as the superior choice over urine tests. The crux lies in its comprehensive detection period, often capturing drug use for up to 90 days.

While urine tests are prone to circumvention and shorter detection windows, hair testing provides a robust solution. Its resistance to tampering, coupled with precise results, reaffirms the reliability of findings necessary for stringent policies and legal procedures.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Columbus Grove, OH benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing. Unlike urine testing, which presents only a brief detection period, hair testing covers up to 90 days, providing a more extensive view of an individual's substance use.

This long-term visibility supports informed decisions, ensuring workplace safety and compliance. By understanding an employee's long-term habits, businesses can maintain a drug-free work environment and foster trust among stakeholders.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle testing in Columbus Grove, OH is unmatched, with a robust design that deters sample tampering. The unavoidable collection process ensures trustworthy results indispensable to enforcing drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
