Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle screening services in Glandorf, Ohio. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our company excels in this field with centers available in every major city nationwide ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Our analysis options include substance detection, alcohol/ETG, and tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, the hair follicle screening method has become increasingly popular for drug tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance counselors are opting for hair analysis over the traditional urine screening. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The advantage lies in detection windows extending up to 90 days through observed sample collection, minimizing the chance of tampering. However, urine tests remain unmatched for detecting usage in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a history of approximately three months for both alcohol and drug use. It's easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hairs (roughly equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not an option, a similar amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory's system. This phase includes verifying the integrity of the sample's sealing and shipping, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Any samples yielding presumptive positive results in Screening require an additional level of confirmation.

Upon obtaining a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluids, which accounts for the complexity of conducting hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers a historical insight: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time rather than simply recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variable results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this analysis actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
