Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Kettering, Ohio. Our expertise in hair testing means that whether you're after a drug or alcohol test, we've got you covered. We operate numerous testing locations nationwide, fully equipped to provide a hair test, as long as you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Our tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity over traditional methods. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests instead of standard urine tests. Hair tests align with zero-tolerance policies enforced by employers, legal institutions, and for probation checks. Their superiority lies in detecting drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, and being tamper-proof. However, urine tests still lead in screening for recent usage, typically within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screenings are now recognized as a significant method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair can capture a long-term record of drug and alcohol intake by preserving biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process is straightforward, with less risk for tampering, and the samples are easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands near the scalp, amounts to 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for testing and validating results. For EtG, or tests that exceed 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be taken. Note that when mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. All other types of hair, such as facial or axillary, are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test in the lab involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample begins being processed into the laboratory’s system. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a quick initial test for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective way to rule out substance use in most samples, positive results require additional confirmation for legal purposes. Any Screening results that are potentially positive must undergo a secondary verification.

Should a sample be potentially positive during Screening, more hair is pulled from it and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at a far lower concentration compared to other methods such as urine or saliva, which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging to perform.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All potentially positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire testing journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair testing can spot drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating the results of a hair test is very challenging, providing more dependable outcomes.
  • Tracks usage history: Offers a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, rather than indicating just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent consumption: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair samples.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing methods, hair tests are usually costlier.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand itself and not the subscalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
