Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lancaster, Ohio. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with facilities in every city nationwide to administer a hair test. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is typically sufficient. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in the realm of drug testing in recent years. Many businesses, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for a hair drug test rather than the standard urine test. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probationary individuals commonly utilize hair follicle drug tests. One key advantage is its extended detection range for drug use, lasting up to 90 days, which are collected under supervision and are extremely hard to deceive. For screening usage within the past 5 days, however, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has emerged as an effective method for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands can chronicle extended-term usage of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers during hair growth. When hair is collected from a position near the scalp, it can offer a maximum detection window of approximately three months for alcohol consumption and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A hair specimen measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields a 100mg sample, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, the recommended sample weight is 150mg. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. Note that references to head hair are specific to scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the intake processing of a sample within a laboratory system. This step involves confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation to be deemed admissible in court. Any samples that yield presumptive positive results during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Upon presumption of drug presence during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for the Extraction phase. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair, focusing on a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to implement.

The Confirmation of any positive result during screening is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are subjected to washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can ascertain drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine analyses, which present a more limited detection period.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to falsification, thus the outcomes are highly reliable.
  • Historical usage insight: These tests can reveal a usage pattern spanning a specific timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses usually entail higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair proliferation can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lancaster, OH, the advantages of hair follicle testing outweigh those of urine tests. Hair testing stands out for its remarkable detection accuracy and consistency, often preferred due to the broad detection window and resilience against tampering. Employers favor hair tests for maintaining strict compliance with drug policies, ensuring a coherent and secure workplace environment over conventional urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle examinations in Lancaster, OH, offer an extended detection period for drug use, often up to 90 days. This extended window provides employers with comprehensive insights into a candidate or employee's substance use history, facilitating better-informed decisions. The extended detection timeline is a distinct advantage over shorter-term urine tests, providing a broader picture of drug habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Lancaster, OH, hair follicle tests are recognized for their resistance to tampering, delivering test results that are reliable and beyond dispute. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
