Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Lima, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, and we maintain testing facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown is required; however, body hair is also an option. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing needs.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug testing over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are particularly chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probation services. The substantial advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection period, often reaching 90 days, with directly observed sample collection making it exceptionally hard to evade. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug usage within a five-day scope, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly become recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for substances. Gathering hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for testing and validation. For EtG analysis, add-ons, or panels surpassing 10, it's advisable to use 150mg of hair. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" refers to all other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the process begins with integrating a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary inspection for substances of abuse. While Screening efficiently excludes drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal acceptance. Samples yielding presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

If Screening identifies a sample as presumptively positive, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, substances are withdrawn from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the challenge of hair drug screening.

Confirmation follows any positive screening outcome, using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Pre-confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process if needed. The entire lab protocol, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Difficult to evade: Manipulating a hair test result is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Reflects usage patterns: It reveals usage trends over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become visible in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are often pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and individual growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle located under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in North Lima, OH, by offering advantages in accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair testing analyzes drug use over extended durations, making it much harder to deceive. Hair follicle testing provides more nuanced insights into an individual's substance habits, thereby enhancing overall testing efficacy.

Extended Detection Window

In North Lima, OH, hair follicle testing provides a significant advantage due to its extensive detection window, which can trace substance use over a period of up to 90 days. This extended timeline gives employers a robust understanding of an individual's substance history, essential for making informed decisions concerning employment and safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
