Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Spring Valley, Ohio. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers available nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is necessary. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

The trend of using hair follicle drug tests has been increasing over the years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now often choose hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, court orders, and probation requirements frequently utilize this method. A primary advantage is its extensive detection period for drug use, covering up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection, making tampering nearly impossible. Urine tests remain the best for recent use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The practice of hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument in uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within its strands, hair captures a prolonged record of substance intake. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use history for nearly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, with low risk of tampering, and facilitates easy shipping.

A 1.5-inch portion containing roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) yields 100mg, deemed the perfect sample size for initial and confirmatory assessments. For EtG inclusions and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is beneficial. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, only scalp hair is meant, while body hair encompasses all other hair types like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The lab procedures in drug testing comprise four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step in integrating a sample into the lab system. It involves checking the specimen for proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any extra data not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial, swift examination for common drugs. While cost-effective for most sample evaluations, positive screens must undergo confirmation for legal validity. Samples identified with presumptive positivity in Screenings require secondary verification.

When a sample emerges positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the collected specimen for Extraction. Here, substances are separated from hair at markedly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), marking hair screening as the most intricate method.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are utilized to confirm positive screening results. All samples with preliminary positivity are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited as per ISO / IEC 17025 requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: The challenging nature of cheating hair drug tests enhances the veracity of results.
  • Historical tracking: Not limited to recent use, hair tests provide a timeline of drug consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: A period of 5-7 days is necessary before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other drug testing processes.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", the process involves examining the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
