Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stewart, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities available in every city nationwide. To conduct a hair test, you need around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or suitable body hair. These tests accommodate drug, alcohol/ETG detection, and other customizable options.

In the last few years, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted toward hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer this method over traditional urine tests. It's used by employers with strict no-drug policies, by legal systems, and for individuals on probation. A significant advantage is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days, collected under supervision and hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine remains the most precise test.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and substance use by capturing biomolecules within the hair's structure. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for examination and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is unattainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a test result in the lab involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the starting procedure of entering a sample into the lab’s records. This process involves confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate substance use in most samples, any positive finding must be verified for it to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are derived from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen following CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug exams can determine drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, increasing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Offers usage history: It can present a timeline of drug usage over a specific timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug exams are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variance: Aspects like hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that is examined, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
