Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive services for hair follicle drug tests in Vincent, Ohio. Whether needing drug or alcohol screening, our specialization in hair testing is backed by facilities available nationwide. You should ideally have 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair for the testing. Capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options, hair tests offer reliable results.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies increasingly favor hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts mandate hair tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation monitors rely on them. The key advantage of hair tests is their 90-day detection capability, observed collection, and inherent resistance to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When the sample is taken near the scalp, it allows for an approximately 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, approximately 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it is specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

There are four key phases in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of entering a sample into the lab's system. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in numerous cases, a positive result must be verified to be legally valid. Samples that test positively in Screening require a further confirmatory test.

If a sample is positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration in comparison to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, resulting in more trustworthy results.
  • Historical insights: It offers a timeline of drug use over time, rather than recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug test types.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
