Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider in Yorkshire, Ohio. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers are available in cities across the nation to conduct these screenings. Candidates should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head, or body hair may suffice. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

The hair follicle test method has been increasingly preferred for drug testing in recent times. It is favored over standard urine tests by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. This test is particularly useful for organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies and for individuals under probation. Its significant advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a lengthy timeline of substance use by securing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for screening and further analysis. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equal measure of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing at the laboratory involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data entry not filled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening cost-efficiently excludes drug presence in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that are seemingly positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can unveil drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
