Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Agra, Oklahoma. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our centers nationwide, including in all cities, specialize in performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Hair tests are available for drug, alcohol/ETG analysis, or other personalized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more common in recent years for drug testing. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse professionals favor this over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers find the prolonged detection window, which extends up to 90 days, advantageous. The observed collection method ensures reliability, although urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When clipped near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol usage within roughly a 3-month span. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch cut of around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for examination and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of principal phases in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a specimen into the lab’s system. This entails ensuring the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing supplemental data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage on most specimens, a positive result necessitates confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. All samples preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and made ready for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a brief detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are challenging to alter, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a trend of drug use over an extended duration, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The test often termed "hair follicle tests" actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
