In Courtney, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialization in hair testing is supported by a nationwide network of testing centers capable of conducting these tests. Generally, it necessitates 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair, though body hair can also be utilized. Analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times, with many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opting for it over standard urine tests. Hair drug tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug-use rules, courts, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection period of roughly 90 days. These tests are virtually tamper-proof due to their observed collection process. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a significant instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can reflect drug and alcohol presence for up to three months. It's straightforward to gather, slightly challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or exams exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other varieties (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's database. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and completing additional data entry if not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary review for drug substances. Though cost-effective for negating drug presence in most samples, a positive screen mandates further confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples presumptively positive during Screening require secondary validation.

Should a sample appear positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the specimen for Extraction. This process separates drugs from hair at a concentration much lower than seen in methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening a complex procedure.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. If needed, presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug testing can uncover drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test ensures greater result precision.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection is lacking: Drugs only become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often named "hair follicle tests", the examination actually involves analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
