Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs and alcohol in Depew, Oklahoma. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in hair follicle testing and provide services nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used for testing. Our hair tests cover drug, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug tests has increased. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are choosing hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers. The key advantage is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust approach for identifying substance misuse. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to three months for substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, comparatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising around 200 strands (roughly matching a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for analysis. For EtG, additional testing, or screenings beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes every other kind (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with logging a sample into the lab’s system, verifying it was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and handling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic tracking system.

Screening is an initial quick assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is an efficient way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires subsequent confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug testing presents the greatest challenge.

Confirming any positive test result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptively positive are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect substances for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which provide a shorter window.
  • Hard to falsify: It's exceedingly challenging to alter a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Hair tests can reveal a trend of substance use across time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to catch recent usage: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to be detected in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
