When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Utilizing hair testing is now considered an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and narcotics by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and narcotics. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.
A sample size of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will weigh 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG supplements, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar volume of body hair may be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean only the scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The four primary stages involved in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning consists of the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screening result must be verified to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.
If a sample indicates a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies to carry out.
Confirmation of a positive screen result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
