Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Northwest Lincoln, Oklahoma. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this method, with testing facilities available in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair analysis. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent for drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. This method is chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, overseen under observation, rendering them nearly foolproof. Yet, for drug use detection within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug or alcohol use over a span of up to three months. Collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch length comprising approximately 200 hairs (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10 types, 150mg is advised. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, body hair of equivalent mass can be utilized. Here, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The core steps in processing drug test results in a laboratory comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any data not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a speedy preliminary analysis for substance detection. Although screening serves as a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive outcome needs court-admissible confirmation. Samples that test positive in Screening require additional verification.

When Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are extricated from the hair at much lower levels than seen in other methods (like urine or oral fluid tests), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug screening procedures.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are pre-washed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny based on both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, outlasting the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It outlines usage trends over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent detection: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative test types.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
