Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Orr, Oklahoma. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we have facilities in all cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the crown or body. Hair tests help detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can include other tailored testing options.

In recent times, the popularity of hair follicle drug tests has increased. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are leaning towards hair drug tests, replacing urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judicial system, or probation use them. Their advantage lies in a longer detection window of about 90 days, with direct collection and minimal chances for manipulation. However, urine tests remain supreme for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method to identify alcohol and drug consumption. The hair captures a prolonged history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for up to about 3 months. It is easily collectable, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of nearly 200 strands of hair, comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil, collected close to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for lab processing of a drug test result includes four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. This stage involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry that's not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, efficient test for detecting substances of abuse. Though a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, confirming a positive screen is essential to ensure it holds up in court. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a Screening test is presumptively positive, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to defraud: It's incredibly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While sometimes termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Orr, OK, outshines traditional urine tests. Hair tests offer a broader detection range of up to 90 days, giving a comprehensive view of substance use compared to urine tests, which cover just recent use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
