Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Shamrock, Oklahoma. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have facilities nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is usually required. Our analyses include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Unlike urine tests, hair testing is preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. It's favored for its longer detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with observed collections that are hard to tamper with. For recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing stands out as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber, hair serves as an extended record of substance intake, capturing data as the strand grows. When sampled near the scalp, it can offer up to a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively tough, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, acquiring 150mg of the sample is preferable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable quantity of body hair is a suitable alternative. References to head hair denote scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory workflow. This comprises ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning an anonymous LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for banned substances. While efficient for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally acceptable. Presumptive positive findings in Screening mandate secondary verification.

In cases of presumptive positive results in the Screening, additional hair is collected from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase retrieves drugs from hair at a significantly lower level than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), underlining why hair drug testing poses the greatest challenge.

Confirmation of positive results is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive specimens undergo washing prior to confirmation, if needed. The whole procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug consumption for as long as 90 days, contrasting the briefer periods of urine assessments.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Chronic data insight: It sheds light on a progressive pattern of drug intake rather than just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent intake: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations tend to cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth disparities can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these analyses assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
