Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Sill, Oklahoma. For those needing alcohol or hair drug tests, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair analysis, operating facilities across all cities Nationwide for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other bespoke testing solutions.

Lately, the method for drug screening has more often embraced a hair follicle drug examination. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair testing over traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is the prolonged detection duration, usually spanning up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and nearly foolproof. However, for drug use detection within the prior 5 days, urine tests retain top accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair follicle analysis is gaining traction as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate detection timeframe of three months for alcohol and drug usage. Hair is easy to harvest, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When speaking of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the laboratory workflow of a drug test evaluation are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This entails ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in legal settings. Samples that test tentatively positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show tentative positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair with a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is exceptionally challenging to perform.

Verification of any positive screen result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing tentative positivity are sanitized prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests that have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Resistant to deception: It is extraordinarily challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation is conducted on the hair shaft and not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
