Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Terlton, Oklahoma. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, their expertise in hair testing is evident across numerous cities nationwide, ready to conduct hair evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is essential. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include alternative hair analysis methods.

In recent times, the practice of drug monitoring has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers upholding strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation clients rely on hair drug tests. A key advantage of hair follicle assessments is their extended drug detection timeframe, usually up to 90 days, through a monitored collection, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use within the immediate past 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair documents a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and various other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is advised. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four crucial stages in the lab handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This involves verifying that the sample has been securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial quick analysis for prohibited drugs. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal defensibility. Any samples with presumptive positive screen results require an additional confirmation step.

When a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most demanding methods to execute.

Validation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo cleaning before confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug usage up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which cover a lesser detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage data: It can offer a drug use pattern over time rather than merely recent consumption details.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Roughly 5-7 days are required for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug screening approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair hue and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
