Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Hallett, Oklahoma. When seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored testing options.

In recent years, conducting drug assessments increasingly involves hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair drug tests over traditional urine ones. Hair follicle tests are ideal for zero-tolerance environments, courts, and those on probation. Their main advantage is the extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days, captured in a supervised setting, with minimal risk of manipulation. Yet, for detecting recent 5-day drug use, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by incorporating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, it’s relatively challenging to tamper with, and it’s easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (around the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp gives 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The four fundamental stages in the laboratory's production of a drug test report include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for confirming abstinence in the majority of samples, court acceptance requires that a positive screen be verified. Samples presumed positive in Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes inspection following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, improving accuracy in outcomes.
  • Shows historical trends: It can present a pattern of substance use over a duration, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hallett, OK, hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can identify drug usage over an extended time, providing employers with a clear picture of an individual's drug history. This method eliminates the uncertainties that often accompany short detection windows of urine tests, making it preferable for comprehensive evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Hallett, OK offers unparalleled insights for employers. Capable of tracing drug usage up to 90 days, it provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history. This extensive timeframe enables employers to make informed decisions about potential hires, maintaining workplace integrity and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Hallett, OK, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests dramatically curtails the risk of sample adulteration. Given their collection and analysis method, these tests provide indisputable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
