Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Tom, Oklahoma. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide to facilitate these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient for analysis. Hair tests can be tailored for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a staple method due to its reliability. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists are increasingly opting for these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle screenings are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal institutions, and probationary programs. The main advantage lies in its extended detection period for substance use, generally up to 90 days, conducted through an observed process that is nearly impossible to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still hold the edge in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the expanding hair shaft, hair offers a sustained historical record of alcohol and other drugs. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to an estimated 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to obtain, not easily tampered with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, the recommendation is to collect 150mg of the specimen. It is advisable to determine the specimen weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. In mentioning head hair, we explicitly refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental procedures in the lab processing of drug test results comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the inaugural processing of a specimen into the lab system. This step verifies that the specimen has been properly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial expedited examination for drugs of abuse. Despite being a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that yield presumptively positive results during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a Screening stage result in a presumptively positive outcome, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug assessment is challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical consumption data: Captures a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and does not examine the scalp's hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
