Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Banks, Oregon. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair testing and has centers nationwide to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom testing options.

In recent years, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests instead of conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The primary advantage of these tests is their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, collected under observation, and nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands as it grows, providing an extended history of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal information about alcohol and drug consumption over an approximately 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, with little risk of tampering, and is convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10 tests, 150mg of sample is advised. We propose measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair may be retrieved. By head hair, we mean scalp hair, while body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical phases in laboratory analysis for a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a specimen into the laboratory's system. Steps involve ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be validated to be considered acceptable legally. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening need further verification.

Should a specimen show a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing a challenging process.

Confirmation of any positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug examinations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Increased resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical use: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, unlike immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to determine recent use: An estimated 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to be visible in hair.
  • Expense: Generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
