Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Bull Mountain, Oregon. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this area and maintain testing facilities nationwide, capable of conducting these tests. Typically, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screenings. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists favor hair drug tests over traditional urine exams. Employers with strict no-drug policies rely on hair tests, as do courts and probationary systems. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection period, usually up to 90 days, gathered through a supervised method, which is nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, to assess drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands offer a prolonged record of alcohol and drug ingestion by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for a period of up to roughly 3 months. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A sample size of 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and further analysis. For EtG, additional evaluations, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, the collection of an equivalent amount of body hair is permissible. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary steps of incorporating a sample into a laboratory's database. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched accurately, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Screening provides an economical method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, though a positive screening result requires verification to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at considerably lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies confirm any positive screening outcomes. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug intake for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test proves quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a drug usage trend over a duration, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often describes the procedure; however, it analyzes the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
