In Coast Range, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require drug or alcohol testing, this service is available across all cities Nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed for accurate testing. Tests can check for drugs, alcohol, or customized options.

Recent trends in drug testing have increasingly involved hair follicle tests. These tests are preferred by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days and near-impossibility of tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to gather, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is advisable. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is divided into four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is entered into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary, cost-effective check for drug presence, effectively ruling out usage in most cases. Positive screens, however, require confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further verification.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing notably challenging to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screen results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are washed pre-confirmation as required. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Coast Range, OR, trumps traditional urine tests by providing superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which primarily detect recent substance use, hair tests offer an extensive detection window that effectively identifies past drug usage.

The longevity of detection makes hair testing a preferred choice for employers and legal entities aiming to enforce strict drug-free policies. Hair testing's accuracy ensures that individuals who violate these policies are appropriately identified.

Extended Detection Window

The advantage of hair follicle testing in Coast Range, OR, lies in its ability to detect drug usage over an extended period, up to 90 days. This long detection window helps employers gain a thorough understanding of an individual's substance use history.

This comprehensive view allows better assessment of potential employees, ensuring that hiring decisions are based on a complete and clear picture of an applicant's past drug involvement, which in turn supports workplace safety and policy compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Coast Range, OR, hair follicle tests significantly diminish the risk of sample adulteration, providing credible and trustworthy results. The difficulty in tampering with hair samples makes these tests a preferred choice for organizations requiring foolproof testing procedures.

This robustness in collection and testing ensures that results are reliable and incontrovertible, providing employers with the confidence they need in maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
