Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Detroit, Oregon. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with locations available in every major city nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Our hair tests are versatile, detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or catering to specific testing needs.

In recent times, the inclination towards hair follicle drug testing has increased. Today, many employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probation officers are key adopters. The standout advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period for substance use, which can be up to 90 days, collected under observation, and is difficult to manipulate. Urine tests remain the preference for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as a potent approach for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within its growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances extending up to roughly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For additional tests such as EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary and quick evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be identified as presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase involves withdrawing substances from hair at a lower concentration level compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis as the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 credentials.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a reduced detection interval.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insight: It offers a utilization trend of substance use over a duration, not limited to current usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Detectability of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Influences like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can impact the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite frequent references to "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
