Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Dexter, Oregon. Our expertise in hair testing covers both drug and alcohol analysis, with testing centers available in numerous cities nationwide. On average, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. These hair analyses can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to include other specific hair testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are now prioritizing hair tests over conventional urine analyses. Hair testing aligns with zero-tolerance drug policies and monitoring probationers. Its key advantage is an extended drug detection window—up to 90 days. While superior in many aspects, urine tests still excel in identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective tool for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can present up to a roughly 3-month detection window for alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of about 200 strands of hair (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. When we say head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial step of integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-saving method to rule out drug use in most samples, but a positive result in screening must be verified to be permissible in court. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening being the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to deceive: It is quite challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insights: It offers an overview of drug use trends over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in Dexter, OR, for several reasons. One of the most significant advantages is its superior detection accuracy. While urine tests are useful for short-term detection, hair tests provide more reliable and comprehensive results, capturing a broader history of substance use habits.

Furthermore, hair testing's nearly impossible-to-evade nature makes it a crucial tool for areas with high substance regulation. Employers seeking a stringent drug-free environment benefit more from the extended accuracy and reliability offered by hair tests, reducing potential loopholes often encountered in urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

In the realm of drug detection, hair testing in Dexter, OR, offers a remarkable extended detection window of up to 90 days. This extensive window provides a more complete view of an individual's substance history, helping employers make informed decisions when evaluating applicants or monitoring current staff.

With hair follicle testing, businesses gain an understanding of substance abuse over months, not just days. This long-term detection capability is invaluable for roles requiring consistent sobriety, ensuring peace of mind through precise and verifiable insights into an individual's drug use history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Dexter, OR, are widely recognized for their tamper-resistant qualities. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
