When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair provides approximately a 3-month window to detect alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.
A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equal amount of body hair is an acceptable alternative. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test includes four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
During Accessioning, the sample is first incorporated into a lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any additional information entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples from Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation process.
In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of hair drug screening.
Confirmation of any positive outcome from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing step prior to confirmation as appropriate. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.
