Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Johnson City, Oregon. With expertise in hair drug and alcohol assessments, we operate testing facilities nationwide equipped to administer hair tests. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is sufficient for testing. Our hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers tailored testing solutions.

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing preference for hair follicle drug tests in the drug testing landscape. Both employers and legal bodies now often require these tests over traditional urine samples. This shift is especially prevalent among zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probation officers. One of the main advantages of hair testing is its extended detection window, which can reach up to 90 days, and its unbreachable authenticity, though urine tests remain superior for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection window for substances, being straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands, about the thickness of a #2 pencil, closest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, the equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The core stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary steps of integrating a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not handled by an electronic custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminating drug use in most cases, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptively positive samples from Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a remarkably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab procedure is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair distinction and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, making results more reliable.
  • Offers historic data: It provides a usage trend of drugs over time, rather than just indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Diverse results: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with traditional urine tests in Johnson City, OR, hair testing emerges superior. It delivers a more extended detection span, ensuring past drug usage is captured comprehensively. Its resistance to tampering further enhances its efficacy over urine tests, which can be more susceptible to manipulation, providing a more consistent and authentic evaluation of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

In Johnson City, OR, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This advantage allows employers to have a thorough understanding of an individual's drug use over a significant period. The extensive timeline grants insights into a person's substance habits, far exceeding the limited timeframe of urine tests, making it invaluable for maintaining a drug-free environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
