Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses in Mist, Oregon. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this area and maintain testing centers in every city across the U.S., including Mist. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is preferable but body hair is an alternative. Drug, ETG/alcohol, and customized options are easily tested with hair samples.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained traction as the method of choice for substance testing in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are now prioritizing hair tests over traditional urine tests. It's ideal for employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation situations due to its extended detection, monitored sample collection, and resistance to falsification. However, for detection within a last five-day window, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the threads of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial intake of a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and sent, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. While it is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal validity. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to implement.

Verification of any positive screen is carried out with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are potentially positive undergo washing before confirmation, as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforming to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Due to the difficulty in manipulating hair drug tests, the results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical information: It can reveal patterns of drug intake over time, beyond recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It generally requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often costs more compared to other testing methods.
  • Potential variation in outcomes: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Discover why hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Mist, OR. Enhanced accuracy and longer detection windows set hair tests apart from urine tests, ensuring past substance use is effectively identified.

  • Reliable results are easier to access with hair tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
