Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Northwest Clackamas, Oregon. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our centers specialize in hair testing. We are conveniently located across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas is necessary. Our hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests gained popularity as a drug testing method. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine screens. This method is essential for workplaces with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial environments, and probation scenarios. The major advantage of hair follicle testing is an extended detection window for drug use, lasting up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process that's tough to tamper with. For recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended view of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, poses challenges to tampering, and is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of about 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to assess the specimen weight using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. In reference to head hair, this specifically means scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main procedural steps in processing a drug test result through a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This encompasses ensuring that the sample remains sealed and is shipped correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and undertaking any supplementary data capture not accounted for in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for illicit substances. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result from a screen must be verified to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify results in a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Imparts historical insights: It can depict a trend of drug consumption over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
