Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Prescott, Oregon. For individuals requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, we provide specialized services across numerous cities nationwide. Generally, a segment of 1.5 to 2 inches from the hair near the scalp or body is sufficient. These hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

In recent years, the popularity of hair follicle drug evaluations has grown. More employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for this method over traditional urine examinations. Such evaluations benefit organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probationary individuals. A primary advantage is the extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection process that is nearly uncheatable. Nevertheless, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug usage, within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive view of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over a period of up to three months. It is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands, similar in size to a #2 pencil, nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage of sample processing in a lab system. It involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry that is not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage for most samples, any positive screen findings require confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that test positive initially in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive initially during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumed positive are washed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks ability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine testing in Prescott, OR? Primarily, hair tests stand out due to their extended detection periods, capturing a longer substance usage history. This testing technique offers superior reliability and precision compared to traditional urine screenings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
