Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services in Riverside, Oregon. For individuals needing drug or alcohol assessment via hair strands, we excel in this method, with facilities Nationwide ready to conduct the test. Ideally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed from the crown or body. Available tests include drug, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug analysis has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests suit employers who enforce strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The core advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that's hard to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests are still the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, offering an extensive history of substance use. When sampled near the scalp, hair allows for the detection of alcohol and other drugs for up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A sample totaling 1.5 inches, with around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) cut near the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is absent, the equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair references pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The core steps in handling a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially entered into the lab's system, ensuring it was shipped and sealed correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary method for detecting drugs. Although cost-efficient to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives need secondary verification.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at a much lower concentration from hair than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation where necessary. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is remarkably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers superior advantages compared to conventional urine tests in Riverside, OR. Primarily, it delivers higher detection precision over an extended window, identifying substance use up to 90 days prior, which urine tests fail to match. This comprehensive overview of drug use ensures better reliability for employers and individuals alike.

Additionally, hair tests mitigate common testing issues such as sample dilution or substitution, common pitfalls in urine testing. This boosts confidence in test accuracy, providing a more trustworthy assessment of a subject's drug usage history.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Riverside, OR, offers unparalleled insight into an individual's substance use history. Capable of detecting drug use spanning up to 90 days, this method reveals consumption patterns over significant periods, crucial for informed decision-making for employers and authorities.

Compared to other methodologies, this extended detection reduces short-term variations, ensuring a holistic view. It enables employers to gauge an applicant or employee's historical drug usage, providing a thorough substance history analysis.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug tests in Riverside, OR, substantially lower the chances of sample adulteration. This method ensures the integrity of the sample by collecting it in an observed, tamper-resistant manner. Unlike other methods, hair sampling is not easily manipulated, guaranteeing the authenticity of results.

The robustness of hair testing lies in its resistance to tampering techniques that are often employed with alternative methods. This strengthens confidence in the trustworthiness of the test outcomes, providing clarity and assuredness in drug testing scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
