Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Scappoose, Oregon. If a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with testing centers across the Nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts demand hair over urine tests due to zero-tolerance policies. Hair tests are advantageous, offering a 90-day detection window, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. Still, for recent drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests prove most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can supply approximately a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to procure, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch section comprising 200 strands of hair (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimum quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG extensions and/or panels exceeding 10 tests, 150mg of the hair sample is preferred. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Synopsis

The four core steps in the lab-based processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial setup of a sample in a lab environment. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-effective method to eliminate the possibility of drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a potential positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcomes is conducted with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can disclose drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to subvert: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not solely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot perceive recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings generally incur higher costs than other drug detection methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and variations in individual hair growth can affect the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
