Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle analysis in Vernonia, OR. Need a drug or alcohol hair test? Specializing in this method, our centers nationwide offer these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, sourced from the head or body. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Lately, drug testing increasingly favors hair follicle methods. Tons of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts require it over standard urine tests. Businesses with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary cases trust hair follicle tests. The advantage? A broad drug use detection window of up to 90 days, carried out under supervision, making deception almost impossible. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a vital resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as an extended record of alcohol and drugs by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (about the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be utilized. In reference to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory handling of a specimen in a laboratory system. This encompasses confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not overseen by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick evaluation for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to negate drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally admissible. All samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: It's notably challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Snapshot over time: It can offer a timeline of drug use, demonstrating patterns over time rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
