In Wapinitia, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these areas, offering facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed for testing. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug testing methodologies. It's now more commonly requested by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. This method is ideal for organizations with strict drug policies, courts, or for individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days. It's conducted under direct observation, making it highly reliable and tamper-proof. However, for recent use within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis serves as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair collection is easy, tough to tamper with, and straightforward to mail.

A 1.5-inch piece of nearly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for testing. For EtG or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. If head hair isn’t available, an equivalent body hair amount can be gathered. By head hair, we imply scalp hair only; body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial sample handling in a lab system, which includes ensuring the sample is well-sealed, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry missing from an electronic custody system.

Screening entails a primary, efficient test for drugs. It serves as an economical method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, but a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptability. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening require verification.

If validated as positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive result happens through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire process is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter duration.
  • Difficult to alter: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Reflected usage history: It shows a pattern of drug intake over time, rather than immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Delay in detection: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is often pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the scalp's follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
