Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Audubon, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have numerous testing centers across all cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is essential. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom testing options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly featured hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair testing over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. Key advantages include a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, supervised collection, and difficulty in tampering. However, for detecting drugs used within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair keeps a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of roughly up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section, consisting of about 200 hair strands (equal in size to a #2 pencil), taken from the scalp can produce 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. 'Head hair' indicates only scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial handling of a sample into the lab’s system, which includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any incomplete data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Presumptively positive screenings call for a follow-up confirmation.

If positive in the Screening phase, more hair from the original sample is gathered for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to execute.

Any positive screening is confirmed through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under strict guidelines, including CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify results: It's exceedingly tough to manipulate a hair drug test, thus ensuring result accuracy.
  • Shows historical patterns: Can reveal a timeline of drug use over time instead of just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to register in hair.
  • Expense: Typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth deviations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently known as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
