In Bushkill, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise is in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide providing this service. For most conditions, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. These tests are applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke options for hair analysis.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted the hair follicle approach. This test is now preferred by various employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts over the conventional urine analysis. Especially for employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers, hair tests are favored due to their extended detection window, up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, being almost impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample that is 1.5 inches long and includes approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly #2 pencil-sized) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional requests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. When scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be substituted. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. The term body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in a laboratory to handle a drug test result consists mainly of four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s framework. It involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry missing in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a quick preliminary check for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly means to eliminate drug usage from most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are initially positive during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase, where drugs are retrieved from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), underlining the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insights: These tests reveal a pattern of drug use across time, not merely recent usage.

Disadvantages:

  • Misses recent use: Drugs usually become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and variations in individual hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
