Based in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with centers in cities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, hair samples should be 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or other body areas. The tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly require hair drug tests over urine tests. These are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation for their extended drug detection period up to 90 days, which is collected in a closely monitored process, making cheating almost impossible. Yet, the urine test remains more accurate for detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can provide an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the hair sample on a jeweler's scale. If the scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary actions: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s database. This process includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, allocating a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and ensuring any needed additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody is entered.

Screening serves as an initial expeditious evaluation for drugs of misuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective way to exclude drug presence in most samples, results that return positive require confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS for any positive screening result. All samples reporting presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drugs for as long as 90 days, which is longer compared to urine tests.
  • Resistant to manipulation: It's very difficult to deceive a hair drug test, providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical data: Can reveal drug use patterns spanning a period, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting latest use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing costs more compared to other testing methods.
  • Variable results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Carlisle, PA, the former clearly holds the edge. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy, capturing drug use over a more extended timeframe. This reliability makes them advantageous over urine tests, which primarily detect recent usage, offering a limited perspective on an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests showcase their strength in Carlisle, PA, with a longer detection window. Able to trace drug use up to 90 days back, they give employers a thorough understanding of an individual's substance use history. This extended detection period ensures a well-rounded view, crucial for informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the key advantages of hair follicle tests in Carlisle, PA, is their tamper-resistant nature. This testing method significantly reduces risks associated with sample adulteration, offering trustworthy and indisputable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
