Accredited Drug Testing in Centerville, Pennsylvania offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty lies in hair testing. We have numerous centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from your head or body, which can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing methods.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over other methods. Many organizations, such as employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, prefer hair testing over the typical urine test. This method is particularly favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals. The primary advantage of hair testing is its extended drug detection period, up to 90 days, carried out in a monitored environment and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests are still considered most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains evidence of alcohol and drug use within the fibers of the hair shaft, providing a lengthy history of substance intake. When collected near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is challenging, and transport is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) positioned nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is an optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair is suitable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in lab drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the sample's initial processing within a lab’s setup, ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary check for abuse substances. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed pre-confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests track drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection frame.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably hard to manipulate, increasing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It can illustrate a pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Limited detection of recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth characteristics can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the focus is on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
