Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug analysis in Titusville, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with centers across all cities in the nation that can perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse advisors now prefer this over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are particularly favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers. The major advantage of such a test is its extended detection timeline, reaching up to 90 days, and is conducted in an observed manner, making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, urine tests are still seen as the best choice for detecting substances used within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is esteemed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within the fibers, offering a prolonged timeline of substance use. When collected near the scalp, it can detect alcohol and drugs over a span of up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, tricky to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately akin to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirming results. For EtG and extended panels beyond 10 tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In case scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in the lab processing of a drug test consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This process checks if the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not captured by an electronic custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for drug presence. Though Screening is a cost-efficient way to discount drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples deemed positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is extracted for further testing. In Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (for instance, urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

Positive results in Screening must be confirmed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Cheating resistance: Hair drug tests are hard to deceive, enhancing reliability.
  • Historical insights: They offer patterns of drug use over extended durations, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
