Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Chalkhill, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is backed by our presence in various cities across the nation, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body, as it can typically be used. The tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many workplaces, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair tests over typical urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and those on probation often choose this method. Hair follicle tests provide a significant advantage with their extended detection time frame, reaching up to 90 days, using an observed collection that is nearly foolproof. For drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures long-term data of drug use, as biomarkers get trapped in the fibers during growth. Hair collected near the scalp offers a detection period of about three months for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg, which is the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, panel tests above 10, or add-ons, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. In terms of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The procedure in lab analysis of a drug test comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of the sample within a laboratory system. This involves ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not supplied via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug presence in most samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation to be considered valid in court. Samples presumed positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening stage identifies a presumptive positive outcome, more hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction, where drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques, like urine or oral fluid tests, thereby making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of presumptive positive results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory routine from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance against tampering: It is quite hard to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug habits over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result disparities: Factors like hair color and individual differences in growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: This test is often called a "hair follicle test," yet it examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
