Accredited Drug Testing provides seamless hair follicle drug testing services in Farmington, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of drug or alcohol analysis through hair samples, our expertise at Accredited Drug Testing includes comprehensive hair testing, with testing centers established across the Nation's cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These tests can analyze substances including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, there has been a shift towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests in the realm of drug testing. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists opt for hair testing over the traditional urine test. Employers with stringent drug policies, legal courts, and probation officers employ these tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process making it very difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests still excel for drug use detection within the most recent five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a valuable means for uncovering drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the hair sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent measure of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample is entered into the laboratory's system. This step involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to discount drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. This step involves removing drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive result from screening goes through Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation conforming to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Resistant to falsification: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Records historical usage: It can outline drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand, not the scalp-underlying hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
